The recent spike in Covid-19 infections in India has worried the Union government. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will reportedly hold a meeting on Monday, March 20th, to review the situation.

On Monday, March 20th, a press release from the health ministry stated that India reported 918 new Covid-19 cases in a single day. On Sunday, March 19th, India witnessed no fewer than 1,000  Covid-19 cases. The number reported is the highest vis-a-vis the data available for the last four months.

ICMR has organised the meeting keeping in mind the uptick of the infection. It’s been reported that XBB 1.5, a substrain of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, is triggering the recent surge of Covid-19 cases.

Recently, India’s health ministry has also issued revised guidelines regarding the treatment of Covid-19. Through the guidelines, the health ministry has urged people to seek medical counsel in case of high fever or breathing distress.

Earlier, the Union health ministry discussed precise plans to contain the spread of Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala and Gujarat with the health ministries of the concerned states.
