For the second year in a row, the top spots at the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations have been taken by women candidates. Of the 933 candidates that qualified UPSC civil services examination 2022, the top four candidates are women with Delhi University (DU) graduate Ishita Kishore securing the top spot.
It’s once again a good year for DU as the second and fourth spots—Garima Lohia and Smriti Mishra— have been also secured by graduates from this university. Meanwhile, the third spot went to Uma Harathi N, a B Tech graduate from IIT Hyderabad.
Last year too, three women candidates—Shruti Sharma, Ankita Agarwal and Gamini Singla—had taken the first three spots.
Greater Noida resident, Kishore is an Air Force officer’s daughter who graduated in Economics from Delhi’s Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC).
A total of 613 men and 320 women have qualified for the UPSC CSE 2022. Among the top 25 candidates, 14 are women and 11 are men.

Every year, the CSE is conducted in three stages — preliminary, main and interview — by the UPSC to select officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) among others.
For this year’s UPSC, the preliminary exam was held on June 5th 2022 and results were released on June 22nd. The main examination was held between September 16th and September 25th whose results were declared on December 6th 2022. The interviews of qualified candidates were conducted last week on May 18th.
