Communists in India oppose Modi’s silence on Gaza genocide

Indian communists have alleged that the alignment of Modi's Hindutva ideology with Israel's Zionism has kept India silent on the genocide in West Asia.

Indian communists accuse the Modi government of being meek on Israel's renewed attacks on Gaza due to ideological alignment with Zionists.

The Indian communists have slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s government’s opportunistic stance on Israel’s renewed genocide in Palestine. As Israel broke the January 2025 ceasefire agreement with Hamas and renewed its genocide in Gaza, India issued a tepid response after remaining quiet on the issue for over 36 hours. The Communist Party of India (CPI) has condemned the position of Mr Modi’s government on Israel’s renewed attacks on the Gaza Strip.

“The Communist Party of India (CPI) was shocked to see the 33-word statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs regarding the developments in Palestine. While the statement expressed concern, called for the release of all hostages, and emphasized the need for sustained humanitarian aid, it failed to condemn the Israeli airstrikes or even acknowledge the tragic loss of more than 500 lives among them many are children and women (sic),” the Marxist-Leninist organisation said in a statement.

It highlighted the ideological alignment of the Zionists and the far-right Hindutva movement led by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the parental body of Mr Modi’s federally ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“This disgraceful and inhuman stance by the Government of India clearly demonstrates that the RSS-BJP regime is endorsing the genocide being committed by the fascist-Zionist Israeli government, as both are ideologically aligned,” the CPI said criticising the Indian Hindutva camp and the Israeli Zionists.

Calling the government to abort its Zionism-appeasing policy, the CPI, which played a key role in shaping India’s pro-Palestine foreign policy in the 1970s, demanded India firmly support the Palestinian people suffering genocidal attacks from the Israeli aggressors.

“The CPI strongly demands that the Indian government abandon its policy of appeasement towards Israel and take a firm stand in support of the Palestinian people and their legitimate struggle,” the statement, issued on March 20th, said.

Meanwhile, India’s largest communist party, the CPI (Marxist) has strongly condemned Israel’s renewed genocidal attacks on the Palestinian people. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the CPI(M) said, “By this criminal aggression, Israel has signaled it is backing out from the second phase of the ceasefire which would have brought peace and an end to hostilities.”

Criticising the attacks amid an inhumane blockade of aid flow into the entrapped enclave, the CPI(M) said, “This latest massacre comes on top of the total blockade of all supplies to Gaza—food, fuel, water and medicine—since March 2 (sic).”

Attacking the US administration led by far-right multi-billionaire Donald Trump, the CPI(M) called Israel’s renewed attacks to flatten Gaza a part of his scheme to evict the people from their land for his real estate projects in the enclave.

“The Trump administration is conniving with this latest aggression by Israel, which aims to flatten Gaza and starve the people out of their homeland,” the CPI(M) said.

“Israel’s military actions need to be stopped forthwith and the second phase of the ceasefire put in place.  This is the demand of peace-loving people all around the world,” it further added.

At the same time, the CPI(M) also criticised Mr Modi’s far-right BJP government’s stance on the Palestine issue.

Criticising the policy of silence on Israeli atrocities on the people of Gaza, which Mr Modi’s BJP-led government has adopted to appease its Zionist allies, the CPI(M) said, “The Modi government must come out openly against the aggressive actions of Israel. It cannot remain silent when an entire people are being subjected to starvation and mass deaths.”

The CPI(M) leadership has called upon its units to protest Israel’s renewed genocidal attacks on Gaza.

“The Polit Bureau calls upon its units to protest against the continuing Israeli genocide and call for an immediate ceasefire and peace settlement,” the party’s statement read.

In neighbouring Bangladesh, where a popular uprising in August 2024 toppled the pro-Modi Awami League government, only the communists have called for massive protests against Israel’s renewed genocidal attacks on Gaza.

The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) has called for a massive protest at the Old Paltan of Dhaka on Friday, March 21st. Considering the day of Islamic congregation in the Muslim-majority country, where the government is trying to cosy up with Mr Trump’s regime despite hostilities, the CPB is expecting a massive turnout for its rally.

Pro-western Islamists have demanded a ban on CPB in Bangladesh recently and refrained from taking any anti-Israel stance.

The solidarity exhibited by the South Asian communist parties for Palestine adds up to the global solidarity and support the colonised people have been receiving in their liberation struggle against the Zionist occupation.
