Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested a deputy tax commissioner in Rajshahi on Tuesday, April 4th, for allegedly demanding a bribe from a person promising exemption from the complaint of low tax assessment.
The ACC Secretary Mahbub Hossain informed the press that Mohibul Islam Bhuiyan, the deputy tax commissioner of Rajshahi Tax Circle-13, was arrested while taking a bribe of Tk 1m.
Hossain informed that Bhuiyan allegedly demanded a bribe of Tk 6m from a citizen who filed his income tax return for the tax year 2022-23 under the universal self-assessment mode. Bhuiyan allegedly threatened to file a case against the person under section 93 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 1984, to reopen the records of returns filed from the tax year 2018-19 to 2022-23.
After the person refused to pay the bribe, Bhuiyan issued a notice on March 8th and continued to harass the complainant. Later, the complainant approached the ACC, according to Hossain.
The ACC’s Rajshahi office filed a complaint against Bhuiyan, and he was later arrested by ACC deputy director Aminul Islam from a building in Rajshahi’s Helanabad area while accepting the bribe.
