A massive Ram Navami rally was held in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Thursday, March 30th, under the leadership of ultra-right forces despite the Delhi Police’s objection.
Earlier, on Wednesday, the Delhi Police proscribed a religious group to organise a 5km-long Ram Navami rally named Shree Ram Bhagwan Pratima Yatra in Northwest district’s Jahangirpuri, citing law and order issues after the religious group sought permission for the same.
Apart from denying permission for the Shree Ram Bhagwan Pratima Yatra, the Delhi Police also
banned the offering of namaz in the nearby parks during the Muslim holy month of Ramzan.
An official order signed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, HQ, Northwest district, issued on Monday, March 27th, said, “I am directed to inform you that your request for Shree Ram Bhagwan Pratima Yatra on the occasion of Ram Navami Mahotsav on Thursday has been considered by the competent authority but could not be acceded to from the law and order point of view.”
The ultra-right organisers of the Ram Navami rally ignored the police directive and organised the roadshow amid heavy police presence. The Delhi Police didn’t comment on the course of action it plans to take over the violation of its order to stall the rally.
Earlier, on April 16th 2022, the ultra-right organisers of a Hanuman Jayanti procession clashed with the local Muslim residents of Jahangirpuri. Over eight, including policemen and civilians, were severely injured in the ensuing clashes, which resulted in a mob attacking a mosque in the vicinity.
Later, the local government body went ahead in apparent vengeance mode to demolish the mosque and the Muslim houses in the locality. The move was stayed by the Supreme Court. Since then, the Jahangirpuri area has remained communally sensitive.
As per the Delhi Police, no untoward incident happened during the Ram Navami rally in Jahangirpuri on Thursday.
