A spat between Iran and the US ensued after the latter’s air raid targeted the former’s military bases in Syria. On Friday, March 24th, the US Department of Defense (DOD) issued a communique accusing Iran of carrying out a drone attack on a military coalition base in Hasakah, northeastern Syria.
Pursuant to the US communique, one US contractor was killed, and six others were injured in this alleged Iranian drone attack. Through this communique, the US stated that on Friday, at 2.40 am (local time), several US F-15 fighter jets conducted an air raid targeting the military bases of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Syria.
Arguing in favour of this US strike in Syria, the US added that it carried out the airstrike in retaliation for the alleged Iranian drone attack. The US further accused the IRGC of launching a barrage of missiles targeting the coalition bases in Syria on Friday morning.
However, the US reported no casualties in this missile attack.
After this US strike in Syria, Al Arabiya newspaper quoted the Iranian Security that the US strike killed 19 Iranian fighters.
Later, Kayvan Khosravi, an Iranian Security spokesperson, decried the US attack in Syria and warned the US of an imminent retaliation. “Any pretext to attack bases created at the request of the Syrian government to deal with terrorism and ISIS elements in this country will be met with an immediate counter-response,” Khosravi was quoted as saying by the semi-official news agency Nournews.
The Syrian media, on the other hand, stood neutral while Iran and the US traded barbs between them. However, after this US attack on Syria, the news media SANA allegedly reported that the US stole 80 oil tankers from the oil-rich Jazira region of Syria and brought them to the US military base in Iraq in the latter half of Friday.
