The Syrian government has promised to continue its support for the Palestinian liberation struggle against Israeli occupation, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported. A statement issued by the government affirmed the continuance of the support that Damascus has provided the Palestinian people with for decades.
This Syrian declaration came on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the al-Nakba, which marks the forceful eviction of the Palestinian people from their homeland in 1948 due to the formation of the Israeli state based on Zionist ideology. The Palestinian people call it the day of their destruction and still hope to return to their homes, which have been under Israeli occupation.
The Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry issued a statement on its Twitter handle on Monday, May 15th, pledging Damascus’s support for the Palestinian cause. The statement said that Syria salutes the steadfastness of the resistant Palestinian people in the face of “Israeli killing and terrorism”.
In the statement, the Ministry has called upon the international community and countries that support the Israeli occupation to “assume their responsibilities in condemning and stopping the practices of the Israeli occupation and its criminal attacks on innocent Palestinian citizens, including women, children and the elderly”.
The government said that it supports the Palestinian liberation struggle for a free Palestine with its capital in Jerusalem. Israel has been pursuing a plan to relocate its capital to Jerusalem, which was supported by the US despite global outrage against the move.
Syria, under President Bashar al-Assad’s rule, has been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian liberation struggle and has been facing attacks from Israeli forces on its territory. The Israeli government allegedly supported the terror groups that waged a major civil war against Assad’s government.
Israel has been occupying the Golan Heights territory that it snatched from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967. The Israeli-Syrian peace talks never reached any conclusion due to Israel’s obstinate position.
