8,700 Ukrainian refugees fled to Europe in the past week: UN

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Office said on Wednesday, May 24th, a total of 8,249,055 (8.25m) Ukrainian refugees arrived in European countries after Russia’s launch of a special military operation in the country in February 2024.

The information available to the UNHCR declares the number of Ukrainian refugees in Europe increased by 8,766 over the past week.

According to UNHCR, between February 24th 2022 and May 23rd 2023, the highest number of people, 2,852,395, (2.85m) sought refuge in Russia. 

The next in line is Poland with 1,605,738, (1.6m), Germany with 1,061,623, (1.06m), the Czech Republic with 520,234, the UK having 204,700, Spain with 179,884, Italy with 175,107, Bulgaria having 159,225, Romania with 132,362, France with 118,994, Slovakia having 116,718 and Moldova with 108,889 refugees. 

The number does not go beyond 100,000 people in other states. In national temporary protection and support programmes, as many as 5,246,661 (5.24m) Ukrainian refugees are included. 

As per UNHCR, since February 24th 2022, 21,924,285 (21.92m) people have arrived in neighbouring countries from Ukraine. At the same time, 13,060,039 (13.06m) people have returned to the border.
