Sri Lanka secured a resounding victory over New Zealand as Chamari Athapaththu unleashed an incredible assault, guiding her team to a commanding ten-wicket win with 33 balls to spare. Sri Lanka’s openers, led by Athapaththu’s unbeaten 80 off just 47 balls, successfully chased down the target of 141 without losing a single wicket.Â
This win provided some consolation for the hosts, who had previously suffered defeat in the first two matches of the series. While New Zealand claimed the T20I trophy after winning the tour, Sri Lanka emerged victorious in the ODIs with a 2-1 scoreline.
Athapaththu showcased her batting prowess by reaching her half-century in just 25 deliveries, smashing a total of 13 fours and two sixes. During the powerplay, she dominated with nine fours and a six, propelling Sri Lanka to a strong position at 64 for 0 after six overs. Harshitha Samarawickrama provided valuable support at the other end, playing a supportive role while Athapaththu unleashed her attacking display. Samarawickrama concluded the match in style, striking three consecutive boundaries to remain unbeaten on 49.
New Zealand’s disappointing total of 140 for nine wickets was primarily due to a collapse in the latter part of their innings, losing five wickets for just 11 runs in the final three overs. Sophie Devine, the captain of the New Zealand team, top-scored with 46 off 25 balls, including two fours and three sixes.
Inoka Ranaweera claimed three wickets for Sri Lanka, while Sugandika Kumari contributed with two dismissals. However, it was Athapaththu’s remarkable assault that ultimately overwhelmed New Zealand, leading to their heavy defeat.
